International Tourist Guide Day, 21 February 2010

On Sunday 21 February 2010  professional tourist guides will be presenting themselves to the general public in the world's major cities.

On this day Guidor, the Dutch Tourist Guide Organisation, will be offering free guided walking tours, highlighting various aspects of Amsterdam's history and culture.

At 11:00 AM, Erik Koldenhof,  the alderman for local business interests,  tourism, and animal welfare in Amsterdam's historic centre will give the starting signal for the first tours beginning from the Dam Square.

The walks cover themes like the architecture of the Dutch Golden Age, religious life in the 16th century, the Amsterdam-Russia connection and the Jewish and maritime history.

The tours will be available in Dutch, English and other European languages.

Everybody is welcome on this day. The tours will have a duration of approximately 90 minutes and depart from the Dam Square at regular intervals between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

The Guidor guides will be recognizable by their blue umbrellas with the white Guidor logo.  

Any tips or gifts will be donated to Stichting Hulphond (Foundation Help Dogs), which will also be represented on this day. One of the foundation's dogs will be there as well.

STICHTING HULPHOND

Stichting Hulphond leidt hulphonden op voor mensen met een lichamelijke beperking. De meeste hulphonden worden opgeleid voor mensen in een rolstoel maar de stichting leidt ook hulphonden op voor doven en voor mensen met epilepsie. Een hulphond opent voor deze gehandicapten letterlijk en figuurlijk deuren die normaal gesproken gesloten blijven. Onze belangrijkste doelstelling is om de zelfstandigheid en de zelfredzaamheid van onze gehandicapte medemensen te bevorderen om een (re)integratie in onze samenleving te bewerkstelligen. Dankzij een hulphond is dit mogelijk! De hulphonden worden kosteloos ter beschikking gesteld, maar daar is veel geld voor nodig. Het werk van Stichting Hulphond wordt mogelijk gemaakt door giften van particulieren, bedrijven, serviceclubs en organisaties.

Stichting Hulphond heeft in 2008 een nieuwe trainingslocatie in Herpen (Noord Brabant), in gebruik genomen waar ook het kantoor gevestigd is. De nieuwe locatie is door H.M. Beatrix geopend. Onze doelstelling is om het aantal op te leiden hulphonden, thans ongeveer 50 per jaar, de komende jaren te laten groeien naar 80 per jaar.

Onze 36 medewerkers worden in hun werkzaamheden ondersteund door een grote groep vrijwilligers, ongeveer 400. De vrijwilligers worden ingezet als gastgezin, verzorgen het collecteproject, verrichten PR- werkzaamheden, etc. Zij zijn een onmisbare schakel binnen onze organisatie. De Stichting bestaat inmiddels 25 jaar.
